Tom Sizemore Talks Drugs, Hollywood & Getting Clean: I ‘Can’t Even Tell You’ How Hard It Was To Quit

Tom Sizemore has battled addiction for years and is about to celebrate his fourth year of sobriety.

In his new memoir, “By Some Miracle I Made It Out Of There,” the actor chronicles his wild history with debilitating drug abuse in Hollywood and what it took to get clean.

“[Cocaine, heroin and crystal meth] are the three most intense, life-destroying drugs,” Tom told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush in a new interview. “Meth – it’s the worst one. It’s sneaky. It doesn’t feel like it’s doing much to you in the beginning and then it’s got you in a grip in addiction.

“I can’t even tell you what it feels like to stop it,” he added. “It takes a lot of help. I don’t see anyone getting off that drug on their own.”

The 51-year-old star, who rose to fame in 1989 with his breakout role in Oliver Stone’s “Born on the Fourth of July,” lost a lot due to his addictions, including wife Maeve Quinlan, who – after standing by him for three years of marriage – finally left in 1999.

After Tom became sober, the pair reunited during an on-screen appearance on CBS’ “Hawaii: Five-O,” where Maeve (of “The Bold and the Beautiful” fame) instantly squashed her former husband’s suggestion they had a chance to fix their relationship now that he’s clean.

“She came to my room – I hadn’t seen her in seven years. It was lovely and she said, ‘Before you ruin the night, no to everything. No to one night, no to a week, no to the rest of our lives,’” he recalled. “And I went, ‘Wow.’ She went, ‘Tom — we did it already. We tried. You made me exhausted. I don’t want to do it again.’”

The “Natural Born Killers” star also opened up about his relationship with Dr. Drew Pinsky (who he sought help from on Dr. Drew’s reality show, “Celebrity Rehab”), and explained why he feels former “Celebrity Rehab” castmate Mindy McCready was unable to get clean, despite her time on the show.

(Mindy committed suicide in February.)

“Drew gives everybody the same prescription. I mean, there’s no secret to getting sober and I went to rehab a lot. I never wanted to get sober, I guess — I know that now because I didn’t do any of the leg work,” he said, adding that to this day, Dr. Drew is “only a phone call away.”

“It’s the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, getting a sponsor, going to meetings, getting a commitment, doing the steps, telling it to another person, that’s what you do. That’s a prescription,” he continued. “Everybody’s got the same prescription. Now, I filled mine and I used it. Mindy, on some level, I guess she didn’t.”
