Barack Obama, Olivia Wilde, Ariana Grande and More Speak Out After Alex Pretti’s Killing

Olivia Wilde, Ariana Grande, and Barack Obama are among the public figures who are speaking out after Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, was fatally shot by a border patrol agent in Minneapolis on Jan. 24. His death marked the second fatality by a federal officer this month in Minneapolis after Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mom of three, was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on Jan. 7. Nationwide protests have been taking place since Good’s death. Shortly after Pretti was killed, DHS released a statement claiming an agent “fired defensive shots” after an “individual approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun” and “violently resisted” to disarm. However, videos of the incident that have since gone viral contradict DHS’ claims, as Pretti – who reportedly was permitted to carry a gun in Minnesota – appeared to be holding a phone, not a gun, in the moments leading up to the altercation and was also seemingly disarmed by an agent who appeared to remove a gun from Pretti’s holster before shots were fired, per NBC News.
