Michael Bolton Breaks Silence On Brain Cancer Diagnosis: ‘You Find Out What You’re Made Of’

Michael Bolton is speaking out for the first time about his brain cancer diagnosis. The two-time Grammy winner sat down with People for a personal interview in which he discussed his journey. “You’re reaching into your resources and your resolve in a way that you never would have thought. Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You’re really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that’s the way you find out what you’re made of,” he told the magazine. Bolton had shared on Instagram in January 2024 that he underwent emergency brain surgery just before the holidays after discovering he had a brain tumor. Following the December 2023 procedure, the 72-year-old was diagnosed with glioblastoma. Though he underwent another brain surgery in January 2024, he has since finished radiation and chemotherapy. The singer undergoes MRIs bimonthly, according to People, to “ensure his tumor has not returned” with his most recent scan in April being clear. “Whenever you find yourself in any kind of challenging position, just to know that you’re not alone going through it is a big deal. It actually helps people to know. It reminds them that they’re not alone,” the musician told the magazine, which also noted that his “short-term memory, speech and mobility” have been affected by his treatments. However, Bolton continues to be resilient. “I want to keep going. I feel there’s still a lot to do on the fight side. I got a title for a song: ‘Ain’t Going Down Without a Fight,’” he said.
