Prince William, King Charles & David Beckham React To England’s Semi-Final World Cup Loss: ‘Gutted’

The royal family is speaking out after England’s loss during the 2026 World Cup semi-finals. On Wednesday, July 15, England fell short 2-1 to Argentina despite scoring first and maintaining the lead for a large portion of the game. After the loss, Prince William shared a statement on social media, noting that while he was “gutted” he still wanted to celebrate the team. “Gutted. England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you. Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament. The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high,” the Prince of Wales wrote alongside an English flag emoji before signing off with a “W.” Despite Prince William being the Royal Patron of England’s Football Association and a longtime fan of the sport, he did not attend any of the 2026 World Cup games. However, Politico confirmed with Kensington Palace that William would only attend if England had reached the final. King Charles also issued a statement after Wednesday’s loss, sharing a photo of players Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham and writing, “Commiserations to Harry and the team. While you Three Lions may be licking your wounds today, you remain the pride of a nation – and will rise again.” Despite England’s loss, the team will face off with France for the third place match known as the “Bronze Final” on Saturday, July 18, while Argentina and Spain are set to play in the Final the following day.
