Brody Jenner On Calling Caitlyn ‘Dad’: ‘It’s Not About Me’

Brody Jenner has been “Keeping Up” with quite a lot these days.

In addition to launching a new talk show, E!’s “Sex With Brody,” the reality star has plenty to process in his off-camera life as well. Brody stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Friday to promote his newest professional venture, but when discussing his relationship with dad Caitlyn and the rest of the Kardashians, he was happy to let the spotlight shine away from himself.

“Dad is doing great. Happier than ever,” Brody told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover.

When asked about how it feels to still call Caitlyn “Dad” after her transition, Brody explained that the title holds less importance than the sentiment.

“Both, honestly. I call her both,” he said of addressing his father as either “Dad” or “Caitlyn.”

“The Hills” alum went on to clarify that what matters most is Caitlyn’s newly reinforced sense of self, and how he can best respect and honor such an important milestone in her life.

“Bruce was harboring a lot of secrets, and I think that now Caitlyn is a much happier person and a much freer person,” Brody said. “Life really is so short and you have to live it the way you wanna live it, and not worry about acceptance. It’s so short, and it’s a gift and you gotta embrace who you really are.”

Brody explained that while, like all families, there were “issues growing up,” it’s been “incredible” to witness Caitlyn’s journey. Although the process has had its difficulties, he acknowledged, the reward of watching Caitlyn finally realize a lifelong dream has put it all in perspective.

“I’m not going to say it’s the easiest thing in the world. It hasn’t been the easiest thing in the world. But it’s not about me. It really isn’t,” he said. “It’s about Caitlyn and about her being free and being who she really is.”

“The whole family is very supportive,” he added. “It’s really not that big of a deal, I don’t think.”

Brody also addressed comments he’d allegedly made about how the familial ties with his famous stepsisters have changed in light of Caitlyn’s divorce from Kris Jenner. His remarks, he said, were taken “out of context.”

“I said, ‘Well, technically they’re not my sisters anymore,’ but I was just stating a fact,” he said of Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian. “I grew up with them. I love my sisters, I still consider them my sisters.”

He extended the same sincerity toward his former stepmom, saying, “Kris and I have had our differences, but it’s all good now. … She’s incredibly intelligent. She is. She’s a very, very smart woman. Savvy. And loves her family, yes.”

While the Kardashians’ public personas and wardrobe choices have been a longtime media focus, Caitlyn’s own foray into high fashion is something about which Brody said he’s unqualified to comment. When asked his opinion of Caitlyn’s glamorous photo shoots, Brody confessed he can’t offer much insight on his dad’s newly minted status as a style icon.

“I’m the worst person to ask that. I’m wearing, like, Dickies and Converse,” he laughed. “She looks great.”

“Sex With Brody” premieres Friday, July 10 at 10:30 ET/PT on E!.
