Get To Know ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Radio Hunk ‘Psycho’ Mike Catherwood

He’s known as “Psycho Mike” during his day job as the host of the syndicated radio show “Loveline,” but “Dancing with the Stars” hunk Mike Catherwood is anything but crazy.

“That name came out of nowhere,” the newly announced “DWTS” contestant told Access Hollywood Live’s Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Thursday morning.

Cheekily, and with a Charlie Sheen reference, Mike added, “it has to do with Adonis DNA, tiger blood, rhymes and winning!”

Mike started out as an intern at Los Angeles radio station KROQ, helping out “The Kevin & Bean Show,” but eventually progressed to morning show contributor, and as of March 2010, the host of “Loveline,” alongside Dr. Drew Pinsky, in March 2010.

After a fan vote, Mike was invited to fill in for Regis Philbin on “Live! with Regis & Kelly,” last month. The radio man credits his charming performance, which saw him holding his own alongside Kelly, interviewing stars like Brooke Shields and Bryan Adams, and putting up with jokes about his resemblance to her husband Mark Consuelos, for landing him the “DWTS” gig.

“It was an unbelievable experience,” Mike said of filling in for Regis. “It’s kind of intimidating because you come from radio where it’s really — it’s like a men’s locker room… and somehow I ended up co-hosting with Kelly and it was very intimidating because I didn’t want to overstep my boundaries.

“I knew I was in a totally different environment,” Mike continued. “I didn’t want to say anything inappropriate, but everybody there made it so great for me and the next thing you know, I guess that sparked some interest from some other people, which turned out to be incredibly flattering and I’m pretty sure that’s how I ended up mixed up on this ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ deal because lord knows I don’t have any ‘celebrity status.’”

Mike said he knows he’s an underdog on the ABC dance competition because his audience primarily knows him from radio, but he thinks his foray into television as an outsider gives him an advantage.

“There’s an upside, because I have a blank slate,” he told Billy and Kit.

“I’m not a star and I don’t know how to dance, so ‘Dancing with the Stars’ is a great fit,’” Mike added with a big smile.

Mike is confident and comfortable talking about personal topics on the radio and he shared his own story of sobriety (nne years and counting) with Billy and Kit.

“I was a big fan of the bottle and I was also very fond of the ‘cocaina’ as they say,” Mike said, using the Spanish word for cocaine. “But, turns out, the use of those two party favors is not good for your ability to succeed in life, so once I cut those out… My life changed dramatically, it’s great.”

“Dancing with the Stars” returns on March 21.
