Ian Somerhalder: Friendship With Bonnie Is Healthy For Damon On ‘Vampire Diaries’

Since finding that teddy bear in present day, Damon Salvatore has been on a quest to save Bonnie in “The Vampire Diaries.”

After spending four months with Bonnie in the 1994 purgatory at the start of the season, Ian Somerhalder’s character grew close with Elena’s best friend, and it’s one of the reasons the actor picked Kat Graham’s character when asked which relationship or friendship has been the healthiest in Damon’s life, of late.

“Bonnie. Elena makes him feel really good about himself, but he also — he’s just done a lot of things that he shouldn’t have done, but ultimately, it makes him feel happy and makes him feel like a man, and he loves her a lot, but Bonnie is just sort of [an] open-ended relationship that was really healthy for him,” Ian told reporters when AccessHollywood.com visited “The Vampire Diaries” set last month.

“I think ultimately, it was the biggest turn other than… I think it was Season 5, when you saw him giggly and then smooching and just sort of… just like a dude in love,” Ian continued. “That was pretty cute — for a second and then there’s no drama and no one’s getting killed and sh**and you ultimately have to change.”

There was a sweet moment between Bonnie and Damon before he went back to the present, where she admitted that despite their past, he really wasn’t the last person on Earth she’d want to spend time in the purgatory/Kai’s hell with.

With a softening of the relationship between the two in the first few episodes of Season 6, did Ian ever wonder about what kind of connection Damon and Bonnie could have had?

“I, beyond the scope of comprehension, 150,000 percent, thought that there was gonna be a Damon/Bonnie relationship, just by virtue of the fact that all the elements sort of strung together — if you looked at them pieced together over time, there’s an extraordinarily thin line between love and hate, and due to the fact that these two hated each other, and they had so much connection in so many different facets of their lives, it only seemed appropriate that they would be given a chance, due to the dynamics of their relationships, to actually have a bit of a run,” Ian said. “But I think that this is their way of allowing that to happen, which is Damon goes after Bonnie [to try and save her], but he’s with Elena and everyone else. It’s not isolated with Damon and Bonnie.

“Maybe by Season 15, maybe they make out, who knows?” Ian laughed.

“The Vampire Diaries” airs Thursday at 8/7c on The CW.
