NEW YORK, NY (November 14, 2007) — A woman was indicted Wednesday in connection with the fatal bludgeoning of her boss, a wealthy real estate agent whose friends included Sting, Madonna and Elton John.
Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon did not disclose the charge against Natavia Lowery because it had not been filed.
Lowery, Linda Stein’s personal assistant, had been charged with second-degree murder in Stein’s death when she was arrested Friday.
Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Evelyn LaPorte kept Lowery, of Brooklyn, jailed without bail and scheduled her next court appearance for Nov. 27.
The indictment report was followed by Lowery’s family and friends yelling support as the 26-year-old defendant was led from the courtroom and by their verbal attacks on the two arresting detectives, who were sitting in the audience. The two detectives and Illuzzi-Orbon were escorted out of the building by court officers.
Lowery’s lawyer, Gilbert C. Parris, said his client’s parents were “distraught that she has been indicted for a murder that she did not commit.”
Stein, a former co-manager of the Ramones, was found face down in a pool of blood inside her $3 million Fifth Avenue apartment. She had been smashed a half-dozen times in the head and neck on Oct. 30 with a weighted yoga stick typically used for stretching exercises, police said. The blows fractured her skull.
Police said Lowery was shown on a surveillance tape leaving Stein’s building shortly after the brief, brutal assault. Stein, 62, was a broker to such clients as Sting and Steven Spielberg and was known as the Realtor to the Stars.
