Erik and Lyle Menendez React to Being Eligible for Parole After Resentencing

The Menendez brothers case has a new update. On Tuesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic resentenced Erik and Lyle Menendez to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole in the 1989 murder of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez. “I’m not suggesting they should be released. That’s not for me to decide,” the California judge said, per the New York Times, but added, “I do believe they have done enough over the last 35 years to get that chance.” Prior to the resentencing, the Menendez brothers, who previously testified they killed their parents in self-defense after allegedly enduring sexual abuse from their father, had been servicing life sentences without the possibility of parole. After Judge Jesic’s ruling, Erik and Lyle gave statements. “I killed my mom and dad. I make no excuses. I take full responsibility,” Lyle said according to NBC News. He reportedly broke down in tears as he continued to apologize and admitted that he distrusted “everyone and everything,” adding that it was his choice to buy the gun. “I was scared but I was also filled with rage,” he said while noting that he didn’t think people would believe the sex abuse allegations. “Today, 35 years later, I am deeply ashamed of who I was,” Lyle admitted. Erik also took responsibility and shared similar sentiments as he expressed “profound sorrow.” “I fired all five rounds at my parents and went back to reload. I lied to police. I lied to my family. I’m truly sorry,” he said, per NBC Los Angeles. The next step for the Menendez brothers’ potential path to freedom lies with the California parole board, who will now decide whether to release them from prison.
