Trans Congress Member Sarah McBride Claps Back After Republican Misgenders Her At Committee Hearing

Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, had a now-viral clapback when being deliberately misgendered during a House subcommittee hearing. Republican Rep. Keith Self of Texas called McBride “Mr.” during the March 11 meeting, prompting the Congresswoman to reply, “thank you, Madam Chair.” Democrat Rep. Bill Keating of Massachusetts interjected in McBride’s defense, telling Self that his introduction was “not decent.” When asked to repeat himself, Self doubled down and misgendered McBride again, referencing what he called “a standard” that has been “set on the floor of the House.” Self was likely referring to President Trump’s executive order declaring that the federal government now recognize only two biological sexes, male and female, and avoid the term “gender.” Keating went on to insist that Self adjust his phrasing to recognize McBride “the right way,” but Self abruptly ended the meeting instead.
